গল্পটির মূলভাব: প্রথম ভালোবাসা কুন্দের মতো শুভ্র এবং সুন্দর। সাদা খাতায় প্রথম লেখার মতোই তার দাগ রয়ে যায় সারাজীবন। পিউয়ের জীবনেও প্রথম ভালবাসা প্রীতম কিন্তু ঘটনাচক্রে বিয়ে হয় বিনয়ের সঙ্গে। তার অব্যক্ত ভালোবাসা বিনয়কেই প্রীতম ভেবে নিবেদন করে নিজের অজান্তেই। এই সত্যটা জেনেও কিন্তু বিনয় পিউকে প্রত্যাখান না করে বরং আরও ভালোবেসেছে। এবং বুঝিয়েছে স্বামী-স্ত্রীর মধ্যে ফাঁক থাকলেই সেই ফাঁক দিয়েই ঢোকে সন্দেহ আর অশান্তি। তাই কোনো স্বামী-স্ত্রীর মধ্যেই কোনো ফাঁক রাখা উচিত নয়, এই বিষয়টিই গল্পটির মূল উপজীব্য।

'পিউ' শোবার ঘরের বড় জানলার দিকে চেয়ে আছে অপলক। চারদিক কুয়াশায় অন্ধকার নেমে আসছে। হঠাৎ তার উদাসীন দৃষ্টি ঢেকে হেঁটে যাচ্ছে একজন। চমকে ওঠে পিউ এই হাঁটা তার বড্ড চেনা। কে এ?এ কি সেই! গত তিন বছর ধরে এই হাঁটাই তো তার বুকের উপর রোজ যায় হেঁটে। দেখি কে এই ব্যক্তি-- ভাবতে ভাবতেই ঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে গিয়ে দাঁড়ায় রাস্তায়, ততক্ষণে ফাঁকা রাস্তা। চারদিক শুধু সাদা ধোঁয়ার কুণ্ডলী। ফেকাসে মুখে ঘরে ঢুকতেই দেখে বিনয় ফিরে এসেছে। আজকে একটু দেরি হলো মনে হচ্ছে? খুব ধীরে জিজ্ঞেস করে পিউ বিনয়কে।

হ্যাঁ, অফিসে কাজের চাপ বেড়েছে। তুমি এই কুয়াশায় কোথায় গিয়েছিলে?

ওই তো একটু রাস্তায়।

এখন?

বড়দিনে অনেকে পিকনিক করে তো, তাই ভাবলাম কেউ করছে নাকি। চা খাবে?

হ্যাঁ দাও মাথাটা বড্ড ধরেছে।

চায়ের জল ফুটছে টগবগ করে। পিউয়ের মনে পড়ে যায় এমনি করেই টগবগে ছিল প্রীতমের প্রেম। প্রথম দেখা এই বড়দিনেই। কি উৎসাহী আর আবেগী হৃদয় ছিল তার। প্রীতম খুব ভালোবেসেছিলো তাকে। কিন্তু সে? দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে তাকিয়ে দেখে চায়ের কেটলির জল শুকিয়ে গেছে। অমনি আবার জল ঢেলে তাড়াতাড়ি চা বানিয়ে দেয় বিনয়কে। চা খেতে খেতে বিনয় পিউয়ের দিকে তাকিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করে, কি ব্যাপার তোমাকে আজকে বড্ড মনমরা দেখাচ্ছে? মন খারাপ নাকি ?

"না না, আসলে বিয়ের আগে প্রত্যেক বছর আমাদের বাড়ির মাইল দুয়েক দূরে খুব সুন্দর যে গীর্জাটা আছে সেখানে যেতাম। খুব মজা হতো। সেই দিনগুলো মনে পড়ছে আজ।"

"আমাদের এখানেও তো গীর্জা আছে, যেতে পারতে"-- সহজভাবেই বিনয় বলে পিউকে।

"তুমি ছাড়া কি একা যেতে ইচ্ছা করে, বলো? ভেবেছিলাম, তুমি যদি তাড়াতাড়ি আসো তাহলে ঘুরে আসা যাবে কিন্তু-----

"ঠিক আছে, সামনের বছর বড়দিনে তোমাকে ঘুরিয়ে নিয়ে আসবোই, কথা দিলাম"-- মুখে হাসি নিয়ে বিনয় আদর করতে গেলে পিউ পিছিয়ে যায়।

কি ব্যাপার আদর‌ও কি করতে পারবো না, নাকি?

আসলে রান্নাঘরে যাবো তো বলেই চলে যায় পিউ। রান্নাঘরে গিয়ে যেন একটু স্বস্তি বোধ করে সে। কেন যে তার মন কিছুতেই সহজ হতে পারে না, সে নিজেই জানে না। আজ যেন বড্ড বেশি মনে পড়ছে প্রীতমকে নিজেকে নিজে কত বোঝায়,প্রীতম

তার অতীত আর বিনয় তার বর্তমান, প্রীতমকে আর মনে রাখা উচিত নয় কিন্তু মাঝে মাঝে তার উচিত-অনুচিত বোধ সব হারিয়ে যায়।প্রীতম তার মন সারাক্ষণ ছুঁয়ে থাকে। আদর করে, ভালোবাসে, রাগ করে--- কত কাণ্ড‌ই না ঘটায় !

একটার পর একটা ছবি ভেসে উঠছে তার মনের ক্যানভাসে। সেই প্রথমদিন বড়দিনের মেলায় ভিড়ের মধ্যে দুজনের ধাক্কা খেয়ে পরিচয়।যাকে বলে "Love at first sight"অর্থাৎ প্রথম দর্শনেই প্রেম।তারপর নাম্বার নেওয়া,কথা বলা এবং ধীরে ধীরে প্রেম কিন্তু তখনো তার কাস্ট কিম্বা পরিবার সম্পর্কে কিছুই জানা হয়নি।অথচ প্রীতমের দিক থেকে এসবের কোনো বাধাই ছিল না।সে তো তাকে ভালোবেসে বিয়েও করতে চেয়েছিল।

সেই প্রেমে বাধ সাধলো তার পরিবার। কেউ জানতো এই বিয়ে তার বাবা-মা কিছুতেই মেনে নেবে না। শিক্ষিত উচ্চ বর্ণের হিন্দু গোঁড়া পরিবার তার। প্রতিলোম বিয়ে স্বীকার করবে না কোনোদিন। তাই বাধ্য হয়েই পিছিয়ে আসতে হলো তাকে তার পরিবারের কথা চিন্তা করে। আত্মপক্ষ সমর্থনে নিজেকে সান্ত্বনা দিয়েছিল এই জেনে যে,বড় প্রেম শুধু কাছেই টানে না,দূরেও ঠেলে দেয়।অথচ প্রীতমকে সেও ভালোবেসেছিল অন্তর দিয়ে। কিন্তু বাবা-মা আর ভাই-বোনের মান-সম্মানের কথা ভেবে নিজের প্রেমকে বলি দিয়েছিল স্বেচ্ছায়।ভেবেছিল ভুলে যাবে কালের নিয়মে কিন্তু আজ‌ও----

"কি গো রান্না হলো?" ঘর থেকে প্রিতমের ডাকে সম্বিত ফিরে পেলো পিউ।

"হ্যাঁ হয়ে গেছে, এই আসছি" থতমত খেয়ে উত্তর দেয় পিউ।

খাওয়া-দাওয়া সেরে দু'জন পাশাপাশি বসে। আবার উদাসীন হয়ে যায় পিউ। পিউয়ের উদাসীনতা দেখে বিনয় তার কোলে মাথা রেখে আদরে চিবুক ধরে জিজ্ঞেস করে,"আজ তোমার কি হয়েছে বলো তো?" বিনয়ের কথা না শোনেই মনে করে তার কোলে মাথা রেখে যেন প্রীতম শুয়ে আছে।

"কতদিন পর তোমাকে কাছে পেলাম, বলো তো? আজ আমার বুভুক্ষ হৃদয় জুড়িয়ে গেল তোমাকে পেয়ে। কতদিন ভেবেছি তুমি কোথায় আছো, কি করছো, দিনরাত শুধু ভেবেই গেছি তোমার কথা। অথচ এই আমি স্বেচ্ছায় তোমার কাছ থেকে চলে এসেছিলাম তখন ভেবেছিলাম তোমাকে ভুলে যাবো কিন্তু দেখো কতদিন পর তোমার সঙ্গে বিয়ে হলো আবার। আজ আমি সত্যিই খুব খুশি। আজ বুঝেছি তুমি আমার সমস্ত হৃদয় ছুঁয়ে আছো দিনরাত। তুমি ছাড়া আমার জীবন অর্থহীন" আপন মনে প্রেমের আবেগে বলতে থাকে পিউ বিনয়কে জড়িয়ে ধরে।

"আরে আরে,কি সব বলছো? তুমি কি পাগল হয়ে গেছো? বিয়ের আগে তোমার সঙ্গে আমার প্রেম হয়েছিল বুঝি! ভ্রু কুচকে অবাক হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করে বিনয়। বিনয়ের কথায় চমকে ফিরে আসে বর্তমানে পিউ। ভয় পেয়ে যায় নিজেই। অন্যমনস্কতায় সে কি সত্যিটা বলে ফেলল বিনয়কে? আতঙ্কে জবুথবু হয়ে যায় পিউ।

"তোমার কি জ্ঞান আছে,নাকি অজ্ঞান হয়ে গেছো" বিনয় হাত দিয়ে পিউকে নাড়া দেয়।

"এবার কি বলবে?" ভীষণ থতমত খেয়ে বলে আসলে যেদিন তুমি আমায় প্রথম দেখতে গিয়েছিলে সেই প্রথম তোমায় দেখে আমি তোমাকে ভালোবেসে ফেলেছিলাম, আর মনের মধ্যে তোমার ছবি এঁকে নানাভাবে কল্পনা করেছি। এগুলো তার‌ই প্রতিফলন।

"ও-ও তা-ই"একটু ব্যঙ্গচ্ছলে বলে বিনয়। তারপর গম্ভীর হয়ে বলে,এবার সত্যি কথাটা বলো তো।

কিছুক্ষণ চুপ থেকে পিউ বলে এটাই সত্যি কথা।

"বলবে না তো, ঠিক আছে"

"সত্যিই তো বললাম।"

না,এটা সত্যি নয়। আমি সব বুঝতে পারছি।

"দ্বিধান্বিত হয়েও বলে এটাই সত্যি"বলেই পিউ চুপচাপ বসে থাকে।

কিন্তু বিনয় আন্দাজ করতে পারে তার ভিতরে কিছু আছে।অমনি পিউয়ের কোল থেকে মাথা তুলে কঠিন হয়ে বলে,আজ থেকে আমরা আলাদা থাকবো।

"কেন?"

"কারণ তুমি আমাকে সত্যিটা বলতে পারছো না বলে।দেখো, স্বামী-স্ত্রীর মধ্যে যদি কোনো ফাঁক থাকে,তবে সেই ফাঁক দিয়ে অশান্তির ঝড় এসে ঢোকে। তুমি কি অশান্তি চাও?"

না না, আমি কোনো অশান্তি চাই না।তবে ভয় হয়।

কিসের ভয়? আমি তো আছি।

"যদি সন্দেহ করো"

কোনো সন্দেহ করবো না,বরং না বললেই সন্দেহ হবে। তুমি নির্ভয়ে বলতে পারো।

ঠিক আছে,বলছি।

তারপর প্রীতমের সঙ্গে তার সম্পর্কের কথা এমনকি আজো যে সে তার অন্তরে আছে --সব বিনয়কে বলে আতঙ্কে কাঠ হয়ে বসে থাকে।

পিউয়ের সব কথা শুনে বিনয় হেসে বলে,এই সামান্য ব্যাপারটা এতদিন বলোনি আমায়।

দু'হাতে জড়িয়ে ধরে চুমু খেয়ে বলে,ওরে পাগলী,প্রীতম তোমার অতীত,আর আমি তোমার বর্তমান। বিয়ের আগে কাউকে ভালোবাসতেই পারো তবে পরে যেন সেটা বর্তমান না হয়ে যায়। মনে করো আমি তোমার সেই প্রীতম।আজ থেকে আমি আর বিনয় ন‌ই,প্রীতম।প্রীতম বলেই ডাকবে আমায়।

বিনয়ের কথা শুনে আনন্দে পিউয়ের চোখ দিয়ে ঝরঝর করে জল গড়িয়ে পড়ে।আবেগে বলে কত ভুলতে চেষ্টা করেছি কিন্তু পারিনি, আবার তোমাকেও জানাতে পারিনি। বুকে একটা পাথর নিয়ে ঘুরে বেরিয়েছি।আজ সেই পাথরটা নেমে গেলো।সত্যি তোমাকে পেয়ে আমি ধন্য।

আমিও ধন্য তোমার মতো নিষ্পাপ ব‌উ পেয়ে। স্বামী-স্ত্রীর মধ্যে কোনো গোপনীয়তা রাখতে নেই। তোমার যা-কিছু সব আমার, আমার যা-কিছু সব তোমার, তবেই তো স্বামী-স্ত্রীর ভালোবাসা দিয়ে গড়ে একটি সুন্দর ভালো বাসা।

অবাক হয়ে বিনয়ের মিষ্টি কথাগুলো শুনতে শুনতে পিউ হারিয়ে যায় বিনয় থুরি প্রীতমের মাঝে। তখন ভোর হয় হয়।বাড়ির পিছনের গাছে তখন শিষ দিচ্ছে দোয়েল।
